The Cathedral of Valencia, identified under the name of Cathedral-Basilica Metropolitana de la Asunción de Nuestra Señora de Valencia Church, is the greatest religious architectural representation that the city has to offer.

Its impressive dimensions allow you to discover it from Plaza de la Virgen, Plaza de la Reina and Plaza de la Almoina.

The origin of Valencia Cathedral dates back to 1262. History, however, goes back to 1238, when, at the desire of James I, the Cathedral was recovered under the dedication of the Blessed Virgin Mary.

Since its construction until today, numerous artists have participated in its creation and remodeling, as well as different architectural styles. Andreu Juliá, Joan Franch, Pere Balaguer, Martí Llobet, Francesc Baldomar or Gaspar Gregori are some of those responsible for the evolution of its architecture to the present day, passing through the classic styles of Romanesque, Valencian Gothic, Renaissance, Baroque and finally Neoclassical.

Valencia Cathedral is erected over three naves with chapels present between transept buttresses. In addition, it also has three doors of different architectural style each (Romanesque, Gothic and Baroque).

It also has a bell tower popularly known in Valencia as El Micalet, as well as the chapel of the Holy Chalice, which was the old chapter house.

The construction was carried out on load-bearing walls of stalls, columns of stalls and tile, while for the supporting system different types of vault were used.

Of particular note are those with stone ribs, but there are also ridge vaults in the ambulatory and vaults starred as in the chapter house, arched stone vaults at the existing entrance to the Micalet, domes over the chapels and a beautiful structure on the lantern.

As for the roof, it is mainly flat, although there are bodies that have a roof of Arabic tiles.

Its location in the city and its historical, architectural and religious importance present the Cathedral of Valencia as an essential destination for both tourists and Valencians themselves.
