Sculptures

Although sometimes sculpture, one of the main chapters of Fine Arts, is relegated to the background in front of architecture and the urbanization of public spaces, the truth is that this greatly conditions the image of the city, its physiognomy and his identity.

Our city has always been aware of the importance of its public decoration, but since the middle of the 19th century a growing movement has been detected that coincides with the transformation of Valencia into a modern city, through the layout of new residential districts, avenues and large roads and the execution of the most important urban reforms, after the demolition of the walls.

Public art was then used, as in the rest of Europe, to decorate and beautify squares, gardens, parks and other public spaces, but in addition, the selection of sculptures and pieces of art and its location express the evolution of the image of the city that is to be projected. Thus, our sculptures and monuments synthesize the aesthetic, urbanistic, economic and ideological essence of the city.
