Richard Strauss – Salomé, op. 54 (opera in concert version)

Opera in concert returns to the Palau de la Música, featuring Richard Strauss’s “Salomé,” a true musical marvel of German expressionism, ideal for the excellent acoustics of the Iturbi Hall. The Valencia Orchestra, along with a stellar cast including soprano Lise Lindstrom, baritone Michael Nagy, tenors Michael Weinius and Jon Jurgens, and mezzo-soprano Stefanie Iranyi, will be under the direction of Alexander Liebreich, a Strauss expert and president of the Richard-Strauss-Gesellschaft e.V. (RSG), founded in 1976 to research, promote, and cultivate the work of Richard Strauss. This opera is inspired by Oscar Wilde’s “Salomé,” and Strauss, after seeing it, decided to adapt it to the libretto of his own opera, resulting in a title that scandalized Europe and America. Tremendously sensual, its orchestration is rich, and its brutal and impactful ending cannot leave anyone indifferent.

This diva of singing, a regular in all major world theaters, possesses a warm tone, a wide vocal range, immense musicality, overwhelming breath control, and impeccable diction and phrasing. Ludwig van Beethoven – Coriolan Overture, op. 62

Pascal Dusapin – Wenn Du dem Wind. Three scenes from the opera, Penthesilea

Ludwig van Beethoven – Symphony No. 5 in C Minor, op. 67

The Valencia Orchestra, under the direction of Alexander Liebreich, performs a program of undeniable interest that combines German romanticism with French avant-garde. A concert that includes the beautiful “Coriolan” Overture by Beethoven and one of his most important symphonies, known and beloved by the general public, the Fifth Symphony, with its famous and powerful beginning (G-G-G-E), which the composer himself defined as “Thus fate knocks at the door.” Also included is “Wenn Du dem Wind. Three scenes from the opera Penthesilea” by Pascal Dusapin, composer in residence in the current season and one of the most recognized contemporary composers internationally. It is no coincidence that he shares the program with Beethoven, as the French composer is a fan of Beethoven’s quartets and, like the German, desires his music to provoke changes in the audience.

LUIS FERNANDO PÉREZ, piano

Isaac Albéniz – Iberia Suite

Isaac Albéniz’s “Iberia Suite” is one of the most important piano works ever written for this instrument. Composer Olivier Messiaen described it as “this marvel of the piano perhaps occupies the highest place among the most brilliant samples of the instrument par excellence,” while Manuel de Falla called it “what makes the beauty of this music and its incomparable value for Spain is that it truly represents for us the clear and twilight image of an environment and an era that we will never see again.” It is a work admired by performers, a true tour de force for the concert pianist, full of beauty, complexity, and difficulty. Luis Fernando Pérez, a specialist in this work, a concert pianist highly valued by both the public and critics for his pianistic technique and winner of awards such as the Franz Liszt (Italy), Enrique Granados de Barcelona (Alicia de Larrocha Award), and the Albéniz Medal for his recording of the “Iberia Suite,” will face this masterpiece.

The exuberant “Fantasy Dances” by Joaquín Turina and the famous and spirited Suite No. 2 of “The Three-Cornered Hat” by Manuel de Falla make up this program that brings together the essences of an era, with music composed by the most recognized Spanish composers.

SWR STUTTGART SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA

Andrés Orozco – Estrada, conductor

Ludwig van Beethoven – Symphony No. 6 in F Major, op.68 “Pastoral”

Igor Stravinsky – The Rite of Spring

The SWR Stuttgart Symphony Orchestra returns to the Iturbi Hall, leaving pleasant memories from eight years ago under the baton of Christoph Eschenbach. This time it will be conducted by the energetic and elegant Colombian conductor Andrés Orozco-Estrada, the conductor of the Orchestra Sinfonica Nazionale della Rai, who will also lead the Vienna and New York Philharmonics this season. The program consists of two masterpieces related by their theme, Beethoven’s Symphony No. 6 “Pastoral” and Igor Stravinsky’s “The Rite of Spring.” The first is one of the utmost romantic expressions of nature, beautiful and captivating, while the second is groundbreaking, frenetic, and an apotheosis of rhythm that scandalized the society of its time.
