These houses present a very peculiar style, which could be defined as a free and original interpretation of modernism created by the working class. Since the late nineteenth century, the attraction of citizens for sea holidays, the increase in maritime trade and the greater demand for fish as the city grows, intensifies the links between the Maritime Villages and Valencia.

The simple huts (hence the name of the area), many with the typical forms of “huts”, are becoming single-family houses, with a narrow façade and a lot of depth, usually with a ground floor and a first floor and with a central patio to store fishing utensils.

The language of these buildings is influenced by the cultured works of the ruling class, but with their own nuances that make it a true creation. The characteristics of culturalist and normative naivety and carefreeness, the survival of a line of tradition, the taste for ornamentation and a certain showiness, the care of artisanal work and the lack of aesthetic virtuosity are the elements of popular art that is maintained in these buildings.

The modernist influence usually affects the ornamentation. The tiles that completely cover the facades, a traditional custom of the nineteenth century, acquire designs of a great variation in terms of themes and, together with unpublished motifs, are mixed the typical modernists, both "Art Nouveau" and "Sezesión", and some historicisms .

This type of popular modernism developed mainly around 1915-1920 and lasted beyond bourgeois modernism.
