North Station
The original station of the Northern Railway Company was located at the confluence of Carrer de Ribera and Plaça de l’Ajuntament, but the transformation that took place in this area in the early twentieth century and the need to facilitate traffic through the ring road, advised its move away from the center.
It was thought to place it at the junction of the main roads, but in the end it was decided to move it to its current location.
Designed by the Valencian architect Demetrio Ribes in 1906 and inaugurated in 1917, it is one of the best buildings of our civil architecture and is a monumental and representative point of reference of the city.
Its interior roof, a large canopy on a metal structure with articulated supports, was in its time a true technological demonstration, covering a span of 45 meters. His style is ascribed to the modernist movement, within the current called "Viennese Sezesión", but it is the peculiar way in which Ribes interprets the style that endows it with remarkable uniqueness. The main façade tries to compensate for its accentuated horizontality with the arrangement of three highlighted bodies, two of them at the ends forming towers and the third in the center marking the access. In it, the abundant decorative, colorful details stand out, with numerous ceramic pieces that reproduce different types of floral ornaments and an abundance of coats of arms of the company and the city. The door to the primitive entrance is decorated with two mosaic panels designed by the painter José Mongrell. Also noteworthy is the exuberant decoration of the lobby, with a meticulous design of lockers and wooden curlers, with mosaic inlays and ceramic decorations with an abundance of trencadís, chopped tiles, as a coating of walls and ceilings forming a set of singular beauty.
