Barracks of Sant Joan de la Ribera (North)
The Barracks of Sant Joan de la Ribera is part of the military complex built between 1870 and 1880 next to the old site of the convent of Sant Joan de Ribera . The complex consists of two barracks (north and south) separated by Serrano Flores street, which have come to form two huge blocks of rectangular housing.
The barracks to the north were used for infantry weapons, and lost part of its area when it was built, for military housing, on its northern and eastern boundaries.
In line with the military architecture commonly used by military engineers for this type of installation, the facilities are organized by a series of functional, sober and simple constructions, of academic style, where the different pavilions are arranged around interior courtyards, grouped in grid, through which you access the different dependencies.
The composition of the facades arises by simple superimposition and seriation of a common vacuum module, in this case finished with a segmental arch. The plinths are made of stone and the gabled roofs are made of tiles.
In contact with the Alameda is the noblest part, where there are two symmetrical three-storey modules with axis at the main entrance, resolved by a large landscaped atrium separated from the avenue by a gate.
