The bullfighting festivals have always enjoyed a great reception among the Valencians, both the horseback spears and the -more recent- bullfighting on foot. Until the eighteenth century the shows took place in the market square, although later some races were held in the Plaza de Santo Domingo.

With the construction of the bullring on Xàtiva Street in 1859, the city was endowed with a stable and capable body to accommodate the massive attendance of fans. The bullring is presented to the viewer as a resounding brick cylinder, with four orders of arches, reminiscent of the amphitheater of Nîmes and the Colosseum in Rome. It is probably the first building in the city to use exposed iron, specifically in the columns that hold the galleries of the stands. At the time of its construction, the building had a capacity for 16800 spectators, a figure in accordance with the passion aroused by the "party" among its contemporaries, only comparable to that caused by football now.

Bullfighters like Frascuelo were hailed as popular idols and, saying of the chronicles of the time, more than one would stick to their clothes to see them play.
