Twine literature: the loose folds of the Serrano Morales Library

From the beginning of the printing press, the master typographers realized the profitability offered by the printing of short texts in booklets of few pages, of rapid production, easy reading and affordable price for the general public. This is how the so-called string literature was born, a publishing genre that, over the centuries, diversified to include a rich variety of printed materials: romances, stories, comedy stories, interludes, colloquia, joys, hallelujahs, prints and other trifles nourished the assortments of printers and booksellers.

The themes that we find in the twine folds are very diverse: fiction literature (adventures, love conflicts), news (royal proclamations, wars, criminal events, natural disasters), religion (prayers, miracles, biblical and doctrinal texts, prints) , satire, instruction, political propaganda… The dissemination capacity of these prints was extraordinary, due to their high levels of production, due to their street sales by peddlers who sang or spoke their titles and contents, and due to the oral character of many of his texts, which could thus reach the illiterate public.

The Serrano Morales Library in Valencia has one of the richest collections of loose leafs in Spain. Today this collection can be consulted online in Cultural Valencia, thanks to the digitization and cataloging carried out by the Universidad Católica de Valencia in the framework of the Mapping Pliegos project, in whose portal you can find much more information about cordel literature.
