Until 1864, Valencia City Council was located in the Casa de la Ciutat in front of Plaza de la Virgen. However, the poor facilities motivated its transfer to the Casa de l’Ensenyament in front of Plaza de Isabel II, which is currently known as Plaza del Ayuntamiento.

This former House of Education was a school built between 1758 and 1763. Today the building has been declared a National Historic-Artistic Monument.

The city council currently occupies a space of 6,173 square meters, with four facades to Plaza del Ayuntamiento, Calle Arquebisbe Mayoral, Calle Journalist Azzati and Calle de la Sang.

Between 1901 and 1904 the Valencia City Council building was extended with more rooms and a remodelling was also carried out.

The main façade is the one that overlooks the Plaza del Ayuntamiento. It was remodeled in 1906 and has a shape very similar to that of a palace, with classical elements.

From the entire central body of the Main façade of the City Council of Valencia several elements stand out, such as the stone balcony with four columns, from which numerous acts and celebrations are held, to the clock tower, three stories high and visible from various points of the city.

The balcony was a work of Francisco Mora and José Luis Testor Gómez developed from 1965 to 1967, while the clock was placed in 1930.

Inside the building there are numerous elements to discover by interested tourists. Of particular note is the impressive marble staircase of neoclassical design; the Municipal Historical Museum, with several rooms that collect a good part of the city's history; as well as the Chapel of Santa Rosa de Lima, remodeled in 1935.
