The old Cabanyal station was inaugurated on 20 April 1862, with the opening of the Valencia-Sagunto section of the line linking Valencia with Tarragona.

In 1889, the death of José Campo Pérez, the main promoter of the company, led to a merger with the North Station. In 1941, after the nationalization of the railway in Spain, the station was managed by the newly created RENFE.

In 1991, the underground tracks forced the closure of the station.
It is currently a center created for People with Cerebral Palsy and Related Pathologies of the ASPACE Association, together with the Red Cross and attends to cerebral palsy patients during working hours.
