Franz Schubert – Octet in F major, Op. 166

Schubert’s Octet in F major is a masterpiece commissioned by Count Ferdinand von Troyer, a former student of Beethoven. It is currently one of the most performed chamber works in the repertoire, although its parallelism and its relationship with Beethoven’s Septet overshadowed it after composing it. It will be performed by violinists Raúl Arias and Vicente Balaguer, viola Isabel López, double bass Javier Sapiña, bassoon Juan Enrique Sapiña and horn Juan Pavía, professors of the Valencia Orchestra, as well as the clarinet soloist of the Municipal Symphonic Band Juan Antonio Fenollar and cellist Jorge Fanjul.

Georg Friedrich Handel – Messiah, HWW 56

The British ensemble The English Concert Choir & Orchestra, under the direction of Harry Bicket, will perform the famous oratorio “Messiah” by George Frideric Handel, one of the traditional events in the Valencian auditorium’s programme as Christmas approaches, which has been present since its inauguration in 1987 and which returns with force to the Sala Iturbi. After four years closed for renovation. Soprano Louise Alder, contralto Christine Rice, tenor Nicholas Mulroy and baritone Matthew Brook complete the show’s vocal cast. “Messiah” is a Baroque masterpiece that reviews the life of Christ, with a simplicity and monumentality marked by the peculiar sound of the Orchestra and the use of choirs. As in the famous “Hallelujah” before the conclusion of the second part, in which the choir is accompanied by trumpets and timpani.

György Ligeti Concerto for violin and orchestra

Johannes Brahms Symphony No. No. 2 in D major, Op. 73

The Orchestra of Valencia and its conductor Alexander Liebreich perform one of the symphonic masterpieces of the repertoire, Symphony No. 2 by Johannes Brahms. It is undoubtedly a score of enormous difficulty, vital, melodic and, in short, the pinnacle of German synphonism and romanticism in all its extension. The program, which will begin with another work of Romanticism, well known and appreciated, such as the suite from Tchaikovsky’s ballet “Nutcracker”, will have as soloist the excellent violinist Isabelle Faust, who will perform Ligeti’s Violin Concerto, which, although it is an unmistakably modern work, has its roots solidly planted in tradition. Not surprisingly, Ligeti stated that before embarking on the creation of this work, he thoroughly studied the most important catalog of the instrument, as well as its particular technique.
