Torres de Quart
The Torres de Quart are one of the two gates in the late medieval wall that Valencia conserves, as well as the Torres de los Serranos. If the Portal dels Serrans was the entrance from Aragon and Catalonia, the Quart Gate was, par excellence, the entrance from the Kingdom of Castile.
Built between 1441 and 1470 during the reign of Alfonso V and John II, coinciding with the great expansion with the consolidation of the city as the main cultural and political centre of the Crown of Aragon, they were one of the main architectural works of Valencia during this period. The original design of the work was most likely conceived by Francesc Baldomar taking as a model the Arc de Triomphe of Castel Nuovo in Naples, and was completed by Pere Compte and Pere Bonfill.
The building, made of lime masonry and edges, consists of three sections: two monumental semi-cylindrical towers and a rectangular central body where the door is located under a semicircular stone arch. The monument has a very peculiar characteristic: the plan is arranged biased, that is, obliquely with respect to the line of the wall, to follow the route of the old Camí de Quart, which penetrated the city from this point. Not only the floor plan, but all the vaults and vaults are arranged in this way, turning the building into an architectural tour de force. The optical effect is so perfect that it is not easy to realize this wonderful feature of the construction that integrated it into the suburban fabric effortlessly.
On the first floor of the central gallery we find a two-section arched vault made with rhomboidal pieces that constitutes one of the great masterpieces of Valencian architecture of the fifteenth century.
In the sixteenth century one of the towers was used as a gunpowder store. Between 1623 and 1944 the towers served, first, as a prison for women; and then, as a military prison. This function saved them from the demolition of the medieval wall, which was carried out already late in the nineteenth century.
In 1931 they were declared a National Monument. They can be visited every day.
