València revisits a century of radio history with a podcast that gives voice to its great protagonists

The series is part of the centenary celebrations of the first radio broadcast made in València in 1925.

On April 18, 1925, from a room at the Hotel Reina Victoria, València witnessed the launch of its first professional radio station. One hundred years later, the city commemorates that foundational moment with various events that highlight the role radio has played in the public and private lives of several generations of Valencians.

As part of this commemoration, the podcast València, 100 years of radio is being released—a sound project that traces the evolution of the medium in the city through seven in-depth interviews with key voices from its history. The podcast, produced by Rafa Lupión, is available on Spotify, Apple Podcasts, iVoox, YouTube, and Amazon Music.

From airwaves to oral storytelling
The podcast offers a broad yet intimate perspective on the history of Valencian radio: from its beginnings as a grassroots phenomenon to its adaptation to today’s digital ecosystem. Through the experiences of its protagonists, the series explores how radio has changed, what remains, and what role it can still play in the future.

The journey begins with the city’s official chronicler, Francisco Pérez Puche, who contextualizes the birth of “radiomania” in València. He is followed by musical radio pioneer Enrique Ginés, sports journalist Paco Nadal, the iconic voice of Radio Valencia Amparo Cots, radio executive and manager Eduardo Alcalde, entertainment icon Amadeo Salvador, and journalist Luis Agudo, who closes the series with a reflection on ethics, journalistic integrity, and the responsibility toward the listener.

Each episode—independent yet complementary—offers a conversation with historical depth, a personal tone, and a clear educational intent. More than a chronological timeline, the podcast builds a shared memory through voices that have been part of the city’s life.

A production that accompanies the official events
The launch of València, 100 years of radio is part of a commemorative program promoted by València City Council, which includes the installation of a plaque at the Hotel One Shot Reina Victoria—where that first broadcast took place in 1925—and the opening of the exhibition Cent anys de ràdio a València at the Palau de Cervelló.

The exhibition, curated by journalist José Forés Romero, brings together radio receivers, historic microphones, reel-to-reel tape recorders, soundboards, and graphic and documentary materials from private collections, museums, and radio archives. It will be open to visitors until November 9 and includes contributions from the Maestre family and Fermax, the Telecommunications Museum of the Polytechnic University of València, and collector Pablo Amores.

Listening to understand
Beyond a simple act of remembrance, València, 100 years of radio invites reflection on the social value of radio as a medium of proximity, a tool for civic development, and a transmitter of València’s cultural identity. In a context where traditional radio stations, podcasts, and social media coexist, this series aims to demonstrate that radio—in all its forms—still has a voice, a rhythm, and a purpose.

The podcast has been entirely produced in València and is part of the audio catalog linked to the exhibition. It is designed for all audiences: loyal listeners, the curious, media professionals, communication students, or simply citizens who want to reconnect with the voice of their city.
