In recent decades the concept of Cultural Heritage has been expanded beyond monuments and museums, because as established by UNESCO in its Convention for the Safeguarding of the Intangible Cultural Heritage, the signs of identity of a community do not they are defined only by the material, but also by “the uses, representations, expressions, knowledge and techniques that communities, groups and in some cases individuals recognize as an integral part of their cultural heritage”.
Some of our intangible assets have been included in the Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage and Register of Good Practices in Safeguarding by UNESCO: the Tribunal de les Aigües de la Vega de Valencia and the festival of les Fallas. On the other hand, the Solemnity of Corpus Christi in Valencia and the Manual Ringing of Bells in the Cathedral of Valencia are declared Assets of Intangible Cultural Interest of the Valencian Community together with customs and artistic or customary manifestations common to all the municipalities of the Valencian Community, such as the Valencian ball and the popular Valencian musical tradition materialized by the Musical Societies (Music Bands of the Valencian Community).
During the last years, the Valencian administrations have made great progress in actions aimed at the research, conservation, promotion and transmission of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of the city of Valencia and the Community.
