From medieval troubadours to Tunes , and from cante jondo to Bob Dylan, the charming and intimate combination of guitar and vocals has inspired people around the world since time immemorial. Our ancestors used guitar predecessors to transmit the mundane, the dramatic, and the poetic through oral traditions, many of which are still alive today.
In the golden age of Spanish music (sixteenth century), Valencian composers such as Luys de Milán combined the technical mastery of vihuela with the evocative poetry of the time. Centuries later, this legacy would inspire many Valencian composers such as Joaquín Rodrigo and Matilde Salvador to explore this intimate and expressive sound world. Claudia Montero (1955-2021), the Argentine composer and professor at the Valencia Superior Conservatory, offered a new twenty-first century perspective on this legacy through her intimate knowledge of both Valencian and Argentine musical traditions.
Soprano Eva Paula Bonora Guasp and guitarist Jonathan Ross Parkin present a programme inspired by the rich history of this music, from its earliest incarnations to its contemporary manifestations and, in doing so, will explore the important and underrepresented role of composers working in Valencia in the twentieth and twenty-first centuries.
