Serrano Morales Library

The Serrano Morales Library has its origin in the donation that the scholar José Enrique Serrano Morales (1851-1908) made to the Valencia City Council after his death. It is currently located in the palace of the Counts of Cervelló.

Member of the literary group gathered around the bibliophile Manuel Cerdà, Serrano began his work there of collecting and restless with the world of books and culture, being then when he began to promote his library that would become one of the most numerous and specialized in Valencia at the time. The origin of its collections is very diverse, and it comprises, among others, the libraries of Gregorio Fuster, that of Salvá, part of the library of the illustrated Gregorio Mayans and his brother Juan Antonio, and others belonging to Quirós dels Rius, Ginés de Perellós, or Pascual Puigmoltó.
His erudition allowed him to write numerous articles on disparate subjects, and undoubtedly highlights his work Historical Review in the form of a Dictionary of the printing presses that have existed in Valencia since the introduction of typographic art in Spain until 1868, published between 1898 -1899 that is preserved in the library.

Background:
It is one of the richest in Valencia in ancient collections: manuscripts, engravings, binders, miniado codices, rare copies, princely editions and works printed from the sixteenth to the twentieth, of diverse origin, Italy, Spain, France, Germany, Portugal and the Netherlands and of very varied themes, history, geography, fine arts, literature, sciences, theology, spirituality, bibliographies, catalogues, travel books, Right, letters, local histories, royal privileges and bulls, many of them referring to the history of Valencia. The collection of incunabula, the Gramàtica d’Antonio de Nebrija (XV century), the manuscript Mysteries of the Corpus (XVII century) or the Portulano di Mare (XVII century) stand out for their great bibliographic value.

Researchers have at their disposal different manual files of titles, authors, subjects and periodicals, record books, and inventories and catalogs of manuscripts, incunabula and works printed in the sixteenth century.
