The Orchestra of Valencia will perform the traditional commemorative concert on the occasion of the Day of the Valencian Community. Álvaro Albiach will direct a program which also remembers the figure of maestro José Serrano, on the 150th anniversary of his birth. Thus, the first half will feature the participation of soprano Maite Alberola and mezzo-soprano Sandra Ferrández and will be dedicated to the distinguished composer. The audience will be able to listen to the “Fantasy on motifs of Serrano” by Ricardo Lamote de Grignon, whose father was the first head of the Orchestra; the romance “Niñas que a vender flores” of The diamonds of the Crown by Francisco Asenjo Barbieri, as well as by Maestro Serrano “Que te importa que no venga” by The carnations, “Escena y Farruca” by Soul of God, “Venetian Song” by The chariot of the sun and the recovery of the song “La Valenciana”, with arrangements by Ramón Ahulló. Already in the second half you can hear “Les toreadors” from Suite No. 1 and a selection of arias from Georges Bizet’s famous opera Carmen,2 and the rhythmic and folkloric “Dances of Galanta” by Zoltan Kodály. The programme will conclude with the Anthem of the Valencian Community, composed by José Serrano with lyrics by Maximiliano Thous.

The Cambra al Palau cycle continues, which this year is held in the Almudí, with a program that brings together the violas section of the Valencia Orchestra. In this way, Santiago Cantó, Pilar Marín, Josep Manuel León, Traian Ionescu, Isabel López, Pilar Parreño, Eloise Pinon, Víctor Portolés, Clotilde Villanueva, Francesc García, Miguel Izquierdo and Alberto Marqués, will perform a very suggestive program of works by Bowen, Fleta Polo, Jacob, Mateu and two transcriptions of the viola Santiago Cantó, such as the famous “Oblivion” by Piazzola and the emotional Adagietto from Symphony No. 5 by Gustav Mahler.

R. Strauss: A Hero’s Life
The Orchestra of Valencia begins the 2023/24 Season Ticket with a concert at the Sala Iturbi that will be conducted by its owner, Alexander Liebreich. In the program and as a nod to the inaugural concert of 1987, the public will be able to hear the “Burlesque March” by Manuel Palau. The renowned international pianist Javier Perianes will play a peak work by Manuel de Falla, “Nights in the Gardens of Spain”, in which the performer faces a very elaborate and brilliant score in the middle of an exuberant impressionist orchestration. The concert will conclude with Richard Strauss’s “A Hero’s Life”, the German composer’s sixth tone poem, which exceeds the orchestral dimensions of its predecessors and which Strauss himself wrote was not about any particular historical figure, but recreated ideals of freedom and heroism in general.

Pygmalion, directed by Raphaël Pichon, and with a great vocal cast, will perform one of Mozart’s most beautiful, heartfelt and famous works, his Requiem. A masterpiece that could not be completed due to his illness and that is shrouded in mystery, since the person who commissioned him to compose it was not determined. It was his pupil Süssmayr who completed the instrumentation according to Mozart’s own instructions.

Korngold’s “The Sea Hawk” Overture featured in Michael Curtiz’s film of the same name; the famous and impressive “Atmosphères” by Ligeti, which is part of the soundtrack “2001: A Space Odyssey” by Kubrick, the symphonic suite from the film “The Law of Silence” by Elia Kazan written by Bernstein and “Fountains of Rome” and Pines of Rome” by Respighi, inspiration for so many “peplum” films set in ancient Rome.

The Sala Rodrigo, the chamber hall of reference in Valencia, will reopen with a cycle of concerts, which will begin with a Wind Ensemble of the Valencia Orchestra and a guest conductor of great prestige, the British maestro Paul McCreesh. Founder and artistic director of Gabrieli Consort & Players, he is famous for his energy and the readings he brings to repertoires of the greatest stylistic and historical breadth. The audience will be able to listen to the Serenade No. 10 for winds in B-flat major, KV 361/370a “Gran Partita” by the genius Salzburgus, one of his most extensive and unique works, considered one of the masterpieces written for chamber music with the wind as the protagonist.

One of the great international visits is that of the brilliant German orchestra Rundfunk Sinfonieorchester Berlin and Vladimir Jurowski, one of the most valued conductors on the international scene, which the Valencian public remembers especially for his impeccable direction in the Sala Iturbi, in 2016, at the head of the London Philharmonic. On this occasion, he returns to the main hall of the Palau de la Música to offer a program consisting in its first half of Joseph Suk’s “Scherzo fantàstic” and the always demanding and technical Concerto for piano and orchestra no. 2 by Sergei Prokofiev, which will be performed by Jan Lisiecki, a beloved concert performer in Valencia. In the second part, you can hear the romantic Symphony No. 3 in A minor by Sergei Rachmaninoff.
